Introducing Ourselves

In this third lesson we will learn how to greet people and introduce ourselves in Bulgarian. We will also learn some essential Bulgarian phrases that will for sure be useful.

Generally, in Bulgaria a handshake, direct eye contact and appropriate greeting for the time of the day is considered a polite greeting. You can shake hands with ladies too. Hugs and kisses for greeting are appropriate only between intimate friends.

Please note, that there is a difference in the usage of Здравей, Здравейте and Здрасти. Здрасти and Здравей are both used in informal cases when greeting a single person. Здравейте is again informal, but used when greeting more than one person. Could be also formal, to greet a single person (higher in hierarchy or a stranger).

Note that моля has two menings. One is “You are welcome” as in the following example:

– Моля (You are welcome)[/content_box_paper_white]

The other meaning is “Please”:

Another thing to note: in order to form a negative of a verb you have to simply put the particle не in front:
